Dividing Decimals

Remember the parts of division problem:

dividend

Dividing a decimal by a whole number

- Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend.
- Divide as you normally would (DMSCB). Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check, Bring down

DMSCB Steps

- Divide: Divide the current digit or group of digits by the divisor to get the quotient.

- Multiply: Multiply the quotient by the divisor.

- Subtract: Subtract the result from the current number or group of digits.

- Check: Check if the result is smaller than the divisor. If it is, the division is proceeding correctly.
- Bring down: Bring down the next digit of the dividend and repeat the process.

Example 1:

Example 2:

Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal

- Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right, until you get to the end of the digits.
- Count how many places you moved that decimal.
- Move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places to the right that you moved the decimal point in the divisor.

Example 1:

Divide as you normally would (DMSCB)

Example 2:

Example 3:

The decimal must be moved 2 spaces to the right

When we move these one 2 spaces, we find that we need to add a space. We must fill it in with a 0 and it will become 1330

So, the problem becomes 038 into 1330.
0.38 is the same as 38.

By following the DMSCB steps, you can systematically approach and solve long division problems, even when they involve decimals.
